  • 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture along with the sourdough starter until combined.
  4. Stir in red food coloring until the desired shade is reached.
  5. Drop heaping tablespoons of dough onto baking sheets, spaced two inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are firm and centers are soft.
  6. Allow to cool on the sheet for five minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
